Becoming Small

July 6, 2013 By Erika Leigh Leave a Comment

In every effort to rise above
I watch you sink below
In every twist to be complete
You become a stranger whom I don’t know

With each attempt to be more like them
You lose your inherent grace
With every numbing, blinding choice
Your gifts become displaced

And while they all may cheer you on
Your light gets dimmer yet
Misery loves company, my dear,
I implore you to not forget

It’s not like them you want to be
But ever more truly like you
Gossip and envy’s a soul-numbing game
Which rots the world through and through

Remember that you are unique
Your soul has been granted a voice
That voice has been blessed with a reason
And with reason we all make a choice

Don’t cease to explore your own beauty
Don’t take the easy way out
It’s easy to give up on expansion
And to play upon others’ self-doubt

So remember that you are stronger
Than the way the collective behaves
You will heal this world for far longer
If you step back out into the light from their caves

Take a look at the world from above
Then again as a part of the whole
You made a commitment when you came along
To be the very best version of your soul
